UK hand Mauritius sovereignty of Chagos Islands following a long-running dispute

6 months ago 46

The UK has agreed to transfer the sovereignty of the Chagos Islands to Mauritius. The dispute has been going on for decades. The archipelago in the Indian Ocean is over 200km from Mauritius and made up of more than 60 islands, most of them uninhabitable. One island, Diego Garcia, is home to a military base used by the UK and US. However the new deal will allow the UK retain its use. The UK government said the treaty would "address wrongs of the past”, while the US president Joe Biden welcomed the move, saying "I applaud the historic agreement”. However this decision has come under fire by some conservative MP’s for setting a dangerous precedent, as well as some native Chagossians for not being consulted in the decision.
