MPI: EU can 'improve conditions' for migrants, 'address reasons people leave' country of origin

Germany reintroduced temporary border checks as part of efforts to combat irregular migration and cross-border crime. The coalition government has toughened its stance on migration following a surge in arrivals, in particular people fleeing war and poverty in the Middle East, and a rise in support for the opposition far-right and conservatives. The measures have, however, sparked concern among migration experts, who question their long-term effectiveness. Meanwhile, the UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer is consulting with Italy's Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni on her hardline immigration policy, criticized by refugee groups and others alarmed by Europe’s increasingly strict asylum rules, growing xenophobia and hostile treatment of migrants. For more on hardening immigration policies taking hold across Europe, FRANCE 24's François Picard is joined by Camille Le Coz, Associate Director at Migration Policy Institute Europe and MPI's Senior Policy Analyst. 🔔 Subscribe to France 24 now: https://f24.my/YTen 🔴 LIVE - Watch FRANCE 24 English 24/7 here: https://f24.my/YTliveEN 🌍 Read the latest International News and Top Stories: https://www.france24.com/en/ Like us on Facebook: https://f24.my/FBen Follow us on X (Twitter): https://f24.my/Xen Browse the news in pictures on Instagram: https://f24.my/IGen Discover our TikTok videos: https://f24.my/TKen Get the latest top stories on Telegram: https://f24.my/TGen
