Former North West Deputy Police Commissioner, Major-General William Mpembe says he has been vindicated of any wrongdoing after being acquitted of all charges over killings in Marikana on 13 August 2012. The North West High Court in Mahikeng acquitted him and five others regarding the deaths of three miners, and two police officers, just three days before the Marikana Massacre that claimed 34 lives. Mpembe was charged with the murders after he attempted to intercept a group of striking mineworkers, resulting in fatal clashes between the workers and police. He allegedly instructed police to fire teargas, stun grenades, and rubber bullets, which led to the chaos that resulted in the deaths. In 2021, Mpembe was also acquitted of defeating the ends of justice for concealing the murder of Modisaotsile Van Wyk Segalala. Segalala is one of the 34 miners who died on 16 August 2012.
