That was a beautiful poem by Phillippa Yaa de Villiers, paying tribute to the late James Matthews who passed away on 7 September. James was instrumental in bringing the voices and experiences of marginalized communities to the forefront of South African literature. He wrote in both English and Afrikaans, bridging cultural divides and making his work accessible to a broader audience. Through his writing he often drew inspiration from the struggles and experiences of Black South Africans, using his work to confront issues of racial oppression, identity, and social justice.
