Gauteng implements water restrictions

7 months ago 86

Gauteng has implemented water restrictions. The Department of Water and Sanitation has warned that if Rand Water continues to take more water out of the Integrated Vaal River System than it is allowed, severe water shortages will follow. Municipalities in Gauteng have already implemented Level 1 water restrictions until March 2025. The situation may be made worse by a planned six-month maintenance shutdown of the Lesotho Highlands Tunnel, expected to start next month. Water experts say Gauteng loses over 40% of clean water, which does not reach tap users. The bulk of this water is lost through leaking pipes, lack of maintenance of infrastructure, theft, and non-payment of services.
