Back in the spring, the French Pacific territory of New Caledonia was gripped by deadly riots that left many businesses in ruin. This, in turn, aggravated its already crippled economy. The nickel industry, the archipelago's primary resource, was already facing setbacks before the riots, forcing many employers to lay off swaths of their workforce.
