September 2024's Household Affordability Index has shown that the average cost of a household food basket rose by 0.5% to just over R5 225 or up by R28.54 on the previous month. On an annual basis, that figure was up R99.91 or 1.9%. The Index draws its data from a survey of 44 basic foods from 47 supermarkets and 32 butcheries across townships and CBDs in Johannesburg, Durban, Cape Town, and Pietermaritzburg, among other areas. To unpack the latest Index for us, I'm joined by Mervyn Abrahams, Programme Co-ordinator from the Pietermaritzburg Economic Justice & Dignity Group.
