A suspect who allegedly set off an explosive device in the lobby of the Santa Maria Courthouse has been detained, according to the Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Office. Five people were injured in the explosion. No court staff members were injured. The suspect, 20-year-old Nathaniel McGuire, was arrested as he tried to get into his car after the explosion. Authorities said McGuire was wearing body armor under his jacket. The undersheriff said McGuire may have been motivated by a recent firearms arrest. He was due to be in court for arraignment in the same department where he's accused of setting off the explosive. "A single individual entered the facility and threw a bag the screening station," Santa Barbara County Undersheriff Craig Bonner said. "That bag exploded." McGuire will be booked on several felony charges including attempted murder, according to the undersheriff. The Santa Maria Courthouse will be closed tomorrow. The FBI is also investigating the incident.
