At least 18 people die as heavy flooding hits parts of central Europe

Heavy flooding has swept parts central and eastern Europe, including several areas in Romania, Poland and the Czech Republic, resulting in at least 18 deaths. Torrential rainfall and surging water levels over the weekend have collapsed bridges and damaged houses, with mass evacuations underway as more rain is forecast this week. Poland's prime minister Donald Tusk announced a state of natural disaster in the flooded areas, with one town submerged in floodwaters up to two metres high.
